About this Tool
What Is MD5?
MD5 (Message Digest Algorithm 5) is a hash algorithm developed by Ron Rivest in 1991. It produces a 128-bit hash represented as 32 hexadecimal characters. It is one of the fastest and oldest hash algorithms available.
Common Uses
- File integrity verification (checksums for downloads)
- Legacy database deduplication and comparison
- Fast data caching and indexing
- Legacy network protocols such as NTLM
Security Warning
MD5 is cryptographically broken. Collision attacks have been demonstrated since 2004, meaning two different inputs can produce the same hash. Never use MD5 for password storage, authentication, or any security-sensitive purpose. Use SHA-256 or higher instead.
