About this Tool
What Is SHA-1?
SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm 1) was designed by the NSA and published by NIST in 1995. It produces a 160-bit hash represented as 40 hexadecimal characters. It was the industry standard for security for over two decades before vulnerabilities were discovered.
Current Uses
- Git version control (commit hashes)
- Some legacy SSL/TLS certificates
- SSH key fingerprint verification
- Archival and legacy file verification
Security Status
In 2017, Google researchers announced the SHAttered attack — the first practical collision on SHA-1. Browsers and certificate authorities have stopped supporting SHA-1 certificates. Do not use SHA-1 in any new security application — migrate to SHA-256 or higher.
